This is a tutorial on how to perform the new and fairly easy to do iOS 4 jailbreak Limera1n by GeoHot. I will take you through all the steps to properly jailbreak an iDevice (in this tutorial an iPod touch 3G) on 4.1 firmware. I will also briefly go over the steps to properly downgrade iDevice firmware from 4.1 to 4.0 or 4.0.1.

1. Upgrade to firmware 4.1 (if not already done).
2. Download Limera1n.exe from http://www.limera1n.com/ (as of now, execution file only available on Windows)
3. Plug in appropriate iDevice, and start up Limera1n.
4. Click „Make it Ra1n“ (similar to blackra1n).
5. Follow instructions in Limera1n box. At one point you will have to hold down both the home and power button, and releasing the power (but keep holding down the home button! Important!) until the jailbreak is done. You will know that the jailbreak is done when a box pops up confirming the jailbreak is done. It will ask you to donate! Please donate to continue future jailbreaks!

For Downgrading Firmware you MUST CHANGE YOUR HOSTS FILE. If you do not know how to do that, simply look it up on youtube! There are tons of videos on how to do so! At the very bottom of the hosts file add the following: 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com . This will allow you to downgrade to an unsupported firmware. In other words, when you downgrade, iTunes checks with Apple to make sure the firmware is legit; with the different address or command in the hosts file, iTunes will instead be directed to Saurik’s server and be tricked into thinking that 4.0 firmware is still being signed by Apple and begin to RESTORE (this is important! It will RESTORE YOUR iDEVICE). To downgrade follow the following steps:
1. This is ONLY from 4.1 to either 4.0 or 4.0.1.
2. Download the Tiny Umbrella.exe here: http://thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com/ (under „Quick Links“ in right side of page).
3. Plug in iDevice and run Tiny Umbrella.
4. In tiny umbrella, click „advanced options, and select the firmware you wish to DOWNGRADE TO, not the current firmware you have.
5. Click „Save SHSH’s“ and wait until done saving.
6.Open iTunes, and after iTunes opens, go into Tiny Umbrella and click „Start TSS server“.
7. Select the iDevice, and shift + right click on the „restore“ button to select the firmware you wish to downgrade to (NOTE: you can download the firmware you wish to downgrade to here: http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/ )
